The Importance of Exercise for the over 40's

When a person reaches 40 or above the nature of the human body makes Exercise more important. The physialogical changes mean that we start to lose muscle. This is partly due to us not using muscle as much as we once did. Additionally bone density reduces leaving us with weaker bones.

Our metabolism slows down resulting in us gaining weight as we start to store fat more easily. 50% of this weight gain can be due to increased inactivity.. (getting a bit depressing isn't it!).

Before you start getting measured up for a casket there are things you can do to help stave off the effects of growing older. The first thing to do is to take action, You need to take the first steps to claiming back your Fitness. You need to get motivated and really want to get fit. Building Muscle mass is a great way to counteract the aging process and there are many ways in which to achieve this. I would strongly recommend that you use a specific Fit over 40 regime. I strongly reccomend Jon Bensons Fit over 40 which we have reviewed elsewhere on the site.

3. Your Energy and stamina levels will increase and in many case so does mental stamina.
4. Your imune system should improve leaving you fitter and healthier than ever before.
5. You be able to partake in sports and hobbies with added vigor

So what type of Exercises should be be looking at doing??

1. Endurance Exercise - This includes such things as running, a brisk walk, cycling, aerobics or even tennis. Normally you are expected to do between 25 and 30 minutes of this particular form of Exercise each day.
2. Strength Training - This includes both weight lifting and uphill training. In the uphill training you can include walking, running or hiking as long as it is up an incline.
3. Stretching - By doing pre and after workout stretches you will be able to retain the flexibility of your muscles. Both yoga and pilates are great for this sort of Exercise and there are even special programs which have been set up for use by the over 40's.
4. Balance - This is where you use a balance ball for core exercises or you can stand on one foot without support instead if you do not have a balance ball.
5. Meditative - Help to lower your stress levels by doing either yoga or Tai Chi.

Fit over 40 programs are growing in popularity with many people today. So why not take a look at the program for yourself and see what Fit over 40 can offer you. I promise you you won't regret it.
